Fodder Crops

whenitrains

We have 1.3 kilometres of Fat Hen Creek frontage adjacent to fifteen hectares of irrigated flats with deep loam soil. When it rains, this rich soil is able to produce fodder crops such as lucerne, oats and sorghum, which we can sell as well as supplementing the feed for our own cattle.

Previous owners of this land derived much of their income from producing and selling fodder crops. During our first summer at Fat Hen Farm (’04-’05) we produced lucerne, sorghum and grassy hay however subsequently our irrigation hole in Fat Hen Creek has dried up due to lack of rain and a falling water table so we have been using the flats to fatten our cattle.

One day we hope conditions will be favorable again to return to crop growing and therefore be able to run greater stock numbers on the farm, as has been the tradition.
