Wiltshire Horn Sheep are a British sheep bred for meat production. At Fat Hen Farm our Wiltshire's play an integral role in the olive grove as biological grass control agents, eliminating the need for mechanical or chemical weed control . On the olive trees they control the growth of water shoots from the base of the tree and trim the lower branches allowing easy access at harvest time.
Wiltshire Horn Sheep are a very low maintenance breed requiring no shearing because they self moult throughout the year. The flock is protected from wild dogs and dingoes by a guardian dog, a Maremma called Murphy. Our other farm dogs, Sharwa and Slim - apart from being a bit lazy, love to round up the sheep and cattle.
At lambing time (August-September) there is occasionally a poddy lamb which has been rejected by its mother. Vigilant bottle feeding for months can ensue to make sure the lamb survives and is then returned to the flock. Jo Jo is one such success story.
